Fanmix: Battlestar Galactica - Apollo
In honor of the Battlestar Galactica  season premire in a little over a week I have a fanmix for one of my favorite - but oft overlooked - characters: Apollo.  Sure, he's not quite as badass and fun as Starbuck, but he's still a great character and one I can relate to more than many of the other characters on the show.  So if you're an Apollo lover like me or just think he's important to fill out the cast, check out this little fanmix I made for him.  The songs flow in roughly chronological order from the miniseries through the end of season 2.

01.  In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3 - Coheed and Cambria
A broad incision sits across the evening
The victim to our fathers lost war
The restless children sit and mourn the graves
Of those they've never seen before
Will they be buried here among the dead?
In the silent secret

Man your battle stations
We'll have you dead pretty soon
And now
Sincerely written from my brother's blood machine
Man your battle stations
We'll have you home pretty soon

Apollo during the initial attack by the Cylons and battling through the onslaught.

02.  Mothers Of The Disappeared - U2
Midnight, our sons and daughters
Were cut down and taken from us.
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat.

In the wind we hear their laughter
In the rain we see their tears.
Hear their heartbeat, we hear their heartbeat.

Dealing with the initial aftermath of the battle and coming to terms with the genocide of his race.  (This is more of a general BSG song.)

03.  He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother - Rufus Wrainwright
It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.

Lee and his inability to leave Zak behind.  The character trait defined him especially at the beginning of the series.

04.  Mistakes We Knew We Were Making - Straylight Run
And all our sins,
Come back to haunt us in the end,
To hang around and tap us on the shoulder,
And smile silent,
It's all implied,
You'll die trying to live this down,
You might as well forget it,
Still I'm convinced,
Wondering what if is the worst thing there is

Second guessing his choices, especially being haunted by the Olympic Carrier.

05.  Everyday Combat - Lostprophets
Living in everyday combat
Day to day commuter riot
Shot down, Dancing in the DMZ
(And we)
Walk on, streets on fire
Caged in with razor wire
Shot down, living in the DMZ
Living in the DMZ

Never a moment to pause and rest; always fighting and always on the run.

06.  A Passing Feeling - Elliott Smith
Everything is gone but the echo of the burst of a shell
And I'm stuck here waiting for a passing feeling
In the city I built up and blew to hell
I'm stuck here waiting for a passing feeling

He starts changing and losing himself.

07.  Into the Dark - The Juliana Theory
Dad, your boy is about to fall.
He walks the razor's edge.
He's on the brink of fading out.
He's at his bitter end.
Dad, your boy who used to run, you taught him how to crawl.
He left home to find his own, now all he had is gone.

He tetters on the edge due to all the physical and emotional strain.

08.  Everyone is Totally Insane - Dandy Warhols
Hear me out, for I was joyful once
Like everyone
Hear me out, I must have changed

He's no longer who he used to be.

09.  The Soldiering Life - The Decembrists
But you,
My brother in arms,
I'd rather I'd lose my limbs
Than let you come to harm.

But you ,
My bombazine doll,
The bullets may singe your skin
And the mortars may fall.

But I,
I never felt so much life
Than tonight
Huddled in the trenches,
Gazing on the battle field,
Our rifles blaze away;
We blaze away.

His only refuge is his fellow pilots who he is fiercely loyal to, especially Starbuck.

10.  Cast No Shadow - Oasis
Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say
Chained to all the places that he never wished to say
Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say
and as faced the sun he cast no shadow

The weight of being CAG and having to make decisions that get people killed.

11.  As It Stands - The Juliana Theory
Everything that rests upon my shoulders fell
I would like to tell anyone who has depended on me for themselves,
I'm sorry

He fells like he's let everyone down.

12.  Ballad for Dead Friends - Dashboard Prophets
It’s a cold day in a cruel world
I really wished I could have saved you
Then who would save me from myself?

Have you been dreaming?
I don't dream at all
I have nightmares
Memories careening
Have you come to kill what's left
Of my smile?

I'll never forget you

Starbuck: "To BB. Jo-Jo, Reilly, Beano, Dipper, Flattop, Chuckles, Jolly, Crashdown, Sheppard, Dash, Flyboy, Stepchild, Puppet, Fireball. ..."
Apollo: "To all of them."

13.  Space Halo - Olivia
You tell me you love me
I watch you look out the window
Into the luminous blue sky
With eyes of loneliness
As if you had to go
I wish you would let go
Of your space halo
Come down here and live with me.
Live with me

Dee's perspective on Apollo's state of mind.  (I may not ship them, but they are unfortunately canon.)

14.  Shadowman - K’s Choice
Any time tomorrow
I will try to do what's right
Making sense of all I can
Any time tomorrow
I'll pretend to see the light
I just might

Please, if you're coming down to rescue me
Now would be perfect

"I didn't want to make it back."

15.  No Bravery - James Blunt
And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

Adama: "We can't just leave all those people behind."
Apollo: "There's nothing we can do. It's taken us forever just to get to action stations over here. We're in no shape for a fight, sir."
Adama: "They'll be wiped out."
Apollo: "We don't have a choice. We need to get out of here right now."

Please, please comment if you download.  I've been puzzled over this for weeks and weeks and would really appreciate any feedback.

I really love the inclusion of the U2 song, I think you've done a really good job here of making this mix interesting musically and fitting to the character- that's hard to do. Thank you!

Thank you! That's what everyone tries to do with a fanmix, I believe, and I'm glad you think I pulled it off!

As usual , I am amazed by the amount of consideration put into fanmixes.
I can tell from the lyrics that you put a lot of love in yours , too.

How do you people manage to do such things? My days are still limited to 24hours.

I'll take that as a compliment. :)

can I just say what first drew me to your mix was the fact that I was drooling over your Apollo icon? ::sighdroolsigh:: snagging mix since I liked more than a few songs. I LOVED your decision with Coheed, James Blunt, Dandy Warhols, and The Juliana Theory.
